Written during the the time I was recovering from fracturing my leg.

grrr@ the healthcare system

Today  I had to have my new post-surgical hinged knee brace fitted at a special place. I had to wait several days for an appointment. The fitting consisted of a man measuring the length of my leg with a tape measure and going to the store room to get the right box.

Cost = $920. Insurance allows $480.42, so that’s what I paid. Someone without insurance would pay the full amount. I can’t believe the this foam, velcro, and plastic contraption  costs more than a few dollars to make. Someone please explain to me what is the difference between mine and the one pictured here which I can buy on Amazon for less than $100.

selective hearing

When I went to the doc, I heard him say that by December I’d be able to put full weight on my bad leg. But it occurred to me today (and Louise confirmed) that’s not at all what he said.

In reality, he said that in December I might be allowed to put up to 50% weight on that leg. That’s not the same at all, is it? Slowly, the realization that it is going to take a long time to heal is creeping in.

Stay in the present, Mary Ann, because thinking about the long time will make you miserable and not make the healing go any faster.
