cat v. dog – birds v. cat

Today on our walk Lucy did her usual thing and obsessively searched for lizards in the greenery that covers the wall that separates the place I live from a park.  She was oblivious to the offensive going on just above my head.

A cat sat on the wall, eying Lucy’s every move, I would guess sensing potential danger, but generally minding her own business. Two mockingbirds thought the cat was the dangerous one. They repeatedly flew to the cat, pecked her, and flew off. The cat seemed only mildly irritated, and this drama went on for several minutes, the bird attacks growing more frequent and more vicious. I guess their nest was near, but couldn’t see it. Finally, the cat grew tired of the pecking birds buzzing her and jumped off the wall. I couldn’t see if the bird attackers followed her after that.

Lucy never did catch a lizard, even though she tried so diligently. Man, It’s a jungle out there.

Things I Did in a Past Life

  • Danced in a Busby Berkeley movie musical. I was the third platinum blonde from the left in the high kick line.
  • Met Cole Porter one time and leaned on his baby grand piano while he played “Night and Day.”
  • Drank martinis at the Plaza Hotel. I was a such a regular, the bartender called me by my first name and always gave me two olives.
  • Summered in Newport with Bunny and Lex.
